Siena - Day 5

We went to the Museo dell'Opera e Panorama del Facciatone. The facciatone, or "big facade," was one side of a church which was never completed due to the outbreak of the Bubonic Plague in 1348. We climbed to the top of the facade for another great view of Siena.

After the Facciatone we entered the Duomo, a striking green-and-white striped church with a lot of magnificent art. My favorite part was the Piccolomini Library - see this picture of the ceiling:

We walked around Siena some more, and in the late afternoon set out for the Enoteca for wine-tasting.

Unfortunately, the Enoteca was closed; but fortunately, while searching for it, we discovered that Siena AC was playing Turin in Serie A soccer. This was a big treat for Bryant, a huge soccer fan. We purchased tickets, cancelled our fancy dinner reservations and found a little deli to make us sandwiches, which we ate on some church steps in a crowded square. Then we walked to the stadium. Our seats were toward the back, but the stadium was very small, and we sat amid Siena fans. The man in front of us kept turning around to make sure Bryant responded appropriately to the action on the field, and Bryant made friends with him despite no common language. Siena won 1-0 in a very exciting match.
