Volterra - Day 7

The morning drive through Tuscany was gorgeous. Although we experienced some hassles with having a car, the flexibility it afforded us was worthwhile. En route from San Gimignano to Florence, on a whim we decided to visit Volterra along the way. It was nearby, and comes highly recommended by (who else?) Rick Steves as his favorite town in Tuscany. We basked in our spontaneity and reset GPS for Volterra.

Volterra sits on top of a hill and is surrounded by a thick wall. Porta all' Arco, the Etruscan Gate (below), dates from the fourth century BC.

We wandered aimlessly around and through Volterra, soaking in its charm and spectacular views.
